The new contingent of 35,000 tons in two years, will enter into force when the current quota of 56,700 tonnes is exhausted.

The EU has justified the new quota by the rising prices of olive oil. According to the EC stocks of olive oil at the end of the campaigns 2011-2012 amounted to 887,700 tons, while reserves are currently estimated at about 317,400 tons. All this plus the fact that, according to forecasts of production campaigns 2015-2016 will not be enough to boost stocks significantly.
